Good morning yogis!
As promised, follow up from last week's video. This one demonstrating how to work on the classic jump back to Chaturanga Dandasana (four-limbed staff pose). This brings agility and endurance to the practice, especially for Surya Namaskars (sun salutations). Practice with control and stability to stay safe and strong.
📝 The jump back is not for menstruating students or injured wrists / shoulders.

Set up a bolster or multiple blankets as a landing pad for the chest and abdomen. Add two bricks (start with medium height) to bring length to the arms.
Start practicing from a lunge position so as to work on jumping one leg back at a time. Play with different brick heights. Then practice the jump back with both legs straight.
I've also included the vinyasa transition to Urdhva Mukha Svanasna (upward dog pose).
📲 Next video...we'll work on the toes! Getting on tops of the feet at once 😉
Thanks as always for watching. 🔹🙏🔹 And feel free to share!

As promised, here is the follow up to the Surya Namaskara (sun salutation) video which I posted at the start of the year in January http://bit.ly/surya-namaskar That one was taken from the Preliminary Course Book. The one featured in this video is from the Intermediate Course Book which shows the way to learn advance Surya Namaskara with proper breathing actions. This sequence has three Chaturangas Dandasanas including a jumping back action. The trunk muscles and spinal muscles are toned in this jumping action. This cycle of asanas, when done correctly, gives power and strength to the arms, legs, trunk, chest and back along with spinal muscles.
Note: In the second round I add Urdhva Namaskar (upward salutation) and look up, as well as Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (upward facing dog) classic version on tops of the feet with the head thrown back.
With the summer solstice around the corner I thought it would be good timing to share this ☀️🙏🏾 music track by pantyraid "Worship The Sun"

I use this set up with a bolster to practice Urdhva Prasarita Padasana (upward stretched legs pose) to build core strength and to help bring awareness for inversion practice.
Place a bolster (or some blankets) underneath sacrum and top buttocks similar to Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (bridge pose). This will help keep the legs straight, the groins soft and the tail bone moving in.
Start with hands pressing down beside hips. If the back feels okay then practice with arms above head in urdhva hastasana. I usually hook the thumb fingers to get more extension and to lift the chest.
When lowering legs, keep drawing the abdomen back (moving navel toward spine). Roll the thighs from outside in and stretch through the inner legs. Keep the tailbone in and move buttocks away from lower back. Keep shoulders pressing down and chest spread.
If back bothers or if it's difficult to raise and lower with straight legs, then bend knees in between transition (from 90° to 60° to 30°) and straighten legs again.
Play around with alternating legs positions and take one leg out to the side (similar to Supta Padangusthasana) and crossing leg over (like Parivrtta Padangusthasana).
Take soft, smooth, slow inhalations and exhalations. Keep face relaxed and mind quite. 😇 Have fun!

What I enjoy about practicing Iyengar yoga is the freedom this style of practice brings. There are a countless number of ways to express the asanas and in doing so letting the asanas countlessly express you!
I find hanging over the folding chair (in Adho Mukha Virasana and Prasarita Padottanasana) very therapeutic for my back and great traction for the spine. Also a nice way to soften the frontal groins.
The Parivrtta Prasarita Padottanasana variation took care of a major kink in a particular part of my back. There is something delightful about twisting with spinal traction and while inverting. It felt like a deep twist and also light and floating at the same time. As if the chair props were some kinda washing machine in which I was being spun and rinsed 😂💦
The Urdhva Mukha variation (or Salabasana variation) over the back rung of the chair is great as it works to strengthen the hamstrings and brings a sense of play with balance. And for fun sake I took a dip into a pose I rarely practice: Ganda Bherundasana! The formidable face pose. 😁
